Book Catalogue Reviews - July - 2022 Issue

Manuscripts, Hand-Drawings, Religious Charts, Printed on Silk, Spiritualism and Other Oddities from Garrett Scott, Bookseller

Section of the “chart of the ages.”

Garrett Scott, Bookseller, has issued their Catalog 42: Shake Up Open Your Eyes. Scott specializes in the unusual, the odd, the downright strange. One thing we can say about a Scott catalogue is that regardless of what you collect, his catalogues will entertain you. This catalogue is a large, newsprint collection of all of 11 items. I doubt you've seen many of these before. Here we go.

1. A school child's hand-drawn atlas of Europe, Asia and Africa. Signed R. A. L. Robinson from Bath, Maine, dated 1831. $1,250.

2. This is a poster with an autograph manuscript written on the back – Our Experiment with the Beverly Hill Billies by Alice Sutherland & Katherine Hutching. The poster announced “On the Stage Glen Rice and his Beverly Hill Billies.” Alice and “Kuddie” went to a performance while they were in Montana in June 1935. Rice, a Los Angeles radio station manager, put together the band to take advantage of the popularity of country music. The young women were wandering around town when they decided to take in the show. They were enchanted by the Hill Billies. Alice writes “we didn't think much of 'em that nite only the little Mexican was cute & a very good singer.” They see them around town the next day and they show the ladies some attention. They were smitten. “The little Mex. would wave at me and look @ me & grin. It tickled me very much.” That band name would make a great title for a TV series. $250.

3. Broadside lyrics to the song The Green Linnet, an ode to Napoleon, with the footing caption For Sale Wholesale and Retail, a great variety of Song Books & Ballds, By O. S. Waling, on the Canal Dock, Rochester. Circa 1847. $150.

4. A circa early 20th century hand-drawn the chart of the ages illustrating the Plans of God for Bringing many sons to glory and his purpose. Lots of biblical history and religious claims are written on this chart, in accordance with Adventist beliefs. $450.

5. Broadside printed on silk of the Farewell Address Andrew Jackson To the People of the United States. From 1837. $2,000.

6. Another silk broadside of President Jackson's Proclamation circa 1832. This is Jackson's proclamation against South Carolina's claim to having the power to nullify federal laws. $2,000.

7. An autograph ink map of upper Manhattan including bridges and other features that no longer exist. Annotations were made. Circa mid-1850s. $400.

8. An 1856 second edition pocket map of Minnesota and part of Wisconsin, colored by hand. $1,100.

9. Presenting the Plans for The New Era Union... This is a book presenting plans for a grandiose Utopian city, with an imaginary dialogue between capitalists and reformers. There is a large folding view of the city and an inserted folding map. This 1897 book was the creation of Charles Caryl, and as one might expect from such a dreamer, he soon moved on to other equally realistic plans. $250.

10. Marriage and Parentage: or, The Reproductive Element in Man, as a Means to his Elevation and Happiness. Sex education such as it was in 1861 from Henry Clarke Wright. $250.

11. Echoes, by Mrs. M. A. Archer, Volume First (all published), from 1867. Reports from the other world from the 18th century spiritualist, including four spirit portraits of children who had departed this world. $350.
